Rochester Red Wings reliever Marquis Grissom Jr. is headed to the All-Star Futures Game in Atlanta- where he’ll face a team managed by his father, two-time All-Star Marquis Grissom Sr.
The announcement on Monday morning means Grissom, the Washington Nationals’ No. 21 prospect, will play for the National League on July 12 at Atlanta’s Truist Park alongside many of the NL’s other upcoming stars. He’ll be managed by Hall of Famer Chipper Jones.
On the other side? A team of American League prospects managed by Grissom’s father, who played two seasons in Atlanta during his 17-year MLB career, winning a World Series ring with the Braves in 1995 as well as two of his four career Gold Gloves.

This is the 26th Futures Game- previous Red Wings to appear in the showcase include Dylan Crews, Brady House, Francisco Liriano, Justin Morneau, and Denard Span. Another Washington pitching prospect, Travis Sykora, was also selected to this year’s game. Currently in AA, Sykora may join Rochester in the future.
Both of the Grissoms grew up in the Atlanta area, with Grissom Jr. also attending Georgia Tech before being drafted in the 13th round of the 2022 draft.
“Marquis is a tremendous young man who has worked extremely hard for this well-deserved opportunity to represent the Washington Nationals and the Rochester Red Wings in the 2025 MLB Futures Game in Atlanta,” said Rochester Red Wings manager Matt LeCroy in a press release. “We wish him nothing but the best!”
Grissom Jr. started the season in AA Harrisburg, where he had a 1.86 ERA in nine appearances and 9.2 inning pitched, but has struggled since arriving in AAA, going 1-1 with a 6.00 ERA and a save in 21 innings pitched in 18 appearances. However, he has had a strong overall track record in the minors: across all levels over the last four seasons, the right-hander is 7-6 with a 2.87 ERA and 26 saves over 106 games and 135 innings pitched. The 23-year-old is particularly known for his change-up, which MLB.com Pipeline rates as a 70 on a 20-80 scale.
His issues since reaching AAA are something he’s acknowledged, including after he recorded his first AAA save on June 1.
“I’ve definitely had some trouble,” he said. “Some trouble I’ve never really had before. But it’s now how you come back from it.”
A showcase among some of baseball’s other top prospects may prove an important step.
The 2025 All-Star Futures Game is on Saturday, July 12, on MLB Network at 4:00 P.M.
It is a nice honor for him for sure, but in truth he has not performed well with the Wings at all. None of the guys in the pen have. ERA’s of over 6.00 indicate major problems in the organization.
If its results we want, we aren’t getting them. If its anything else, then everyone can decide how they feel . The Wings have never found their stride. They did manage two little streaks that teased us but they were followed by more failure at every level. Manager LeCroy has a very tough job. I don’t envy him. He has to deal with the cards he has been dealt and in his quiet hours he probably can’t wait for this season to mercifully come to an end.
