NEWARK, N.Y., — For the second time in as many years, the Wellsville Lions’ season came to an end with a loss to Section VI champion, Medina.
Preston Woodworth struck out 11 and hurled a three-hitter as Medina (22-1) defeated Wellsville (16-4), 6-2 in the New York State Class B sub-regional at Colburn Park, Wednesday night.
Woodworth hit the first Wellsville batter that came to the plate before facing the minimum through the first three innings.
“He’s dialed in right now,” Medina head coach Chris Goyette said of the sophomore right-hander. “He throwing strikes, pumping strikes and keeping them off-balance. He’s tough to hit.”
After allowing a leadoff double to start the fourth, Woodworth issued his only walk of the game. An error then brought home Wellsville’s first run of the game.
He responded by retiring the next five batters.
“He’s gotten stronger and stronger and stronger,” Goyette said. “The sky’s the limit for the kid. He’s super-talented.”

Carter Woodworth plated two with a two-out base hit in the first to give Medina a lead it did not surrender.
The Mustangs tacked on two more in the fourth on a Tyler Kroening two-run double.
Preston Woodworth tripled and scored in the fifth when Medina added two more runs for a 6-1 lead.
Medina took an 8-3 decision when the two teams met last June in the state quarterfinals held at Grand Island High School.

Wellsville came out on top (4-1) when the two teams faced each other in early May.
“It really helped seeing them mid-season after beating them last year,” Goyette said. “They’re such a good team, such a good program and represent Section V so well. I love playing teams like that. They respect the game. They play hard, and they’re really well-coached.”
Trent Green drove in both Wellsville runs. In the fourth, Aiden Cowburn doubled to start the frame and came home one out later. Green drove in Cowburn again with a single.
Medina will face Section IV champion Oneonta in the state quarterfinals on Saturday at Grand Island High School. A 2 p.m. first pitch is scheduled.
