Wednesday Softball Wrap: Witherell strikes out 13 and Smith homers as Haverling advances

Three hits each from Elizabeth Gleghorn and Lizzie Rinella weren’t enough to give Rush-Henrietta the win in the Far West Class AAA sub-regional. Both Gleghorn and Rinella drove in a run in the seventh inning, with Gleghorn’s RBI coming on one of her two doubles. Katelyn Militello also hit safely for Royal Comets.

HAVERLING (19-3) 2
FREDONIA (VI) 1
Kalli Witherell threw 13 strikeouts in a complete game one-hitter as Haverling won the Class B sub-regional. Makayla Smith provided the offense with a home run and a sacrifice bunt. Abbie Whaley doubled and scored a run, while Kas Plewa also hit safely against Fredonia’s Danielle Palisin. Haverling faces Susquehanna Valley on Saturday at Grand Island High School in the Class B state quarterfinal round.
