Fairport and McQuaid open AAA Championship Series, Tuesday

One team is looking to capture its third-straight Section V title. The other aims for its second championship in four years. Fairport and McQuaid open the 2025 Section V Class AAA Championship Series, Tuesday at Monroe Community College. Here’s the breakdown:

How they arrived here: Fairport defeated Rush-Henrietta, 6-1 to reach the finals. McQuaid, the top seed, clinched a bye to the championship game.

Tempo and trends: McQuaid scores 7.2 runs per game and allows 4.9. The Jesuit Knights closed the regular season winning five straight games. Fairport scores 6.9 runs per games and allows 3.7. The Red Raiders have won three straight heading into Tuesday’s matchup.

Players to watch for McQuaid: Thomas Bailey Jr. (.355 AVG., .453 OBP, 1.082 OPS, 20 RBI, 17 runs); Dom Corona So. (.349 AVG., .411 OBP, 14 RBI, 14 runs); Zach Craib Jr. (.324 AVG., .519 OBP, 11 RBI); Cole Englert Sr. (5-3, 1 SV, 40.1 IP, 53 K, 23 BB, 1.140 WHIP, .165 BAA); Jason Larsen Jr. (.390 AVG, .526 OBP, 1.063 OPS, 9 RBI, 12 runs); Jim Randisi Sr. (2-0, 2 SVs, 19 IP, 25 K, 14 BB); Paul Rizzo Sr. (.275 AVG, .393 OBP, 13 RBI, 10 runs).

History 101: Fairport defeated McQuaid, 7-2 in the 2024 AAA semifinals. McQuaid took a 7-5 decision when the two teams met earlier this month. Both teams are looking to win a 10th sectional title and become the eighth program in Section V Baseball history with double-digit championships joining Pittsford Sutherland (16), Wellsville (15), Victor (12), Bolivar-Richburg (12), Lyndonville (11), Notre Dame-Batavia (11) and Oakfield-Alabama (10).

Game 2 of the series is scheduled for Thursday at Fairport.

What’s at stake: Winner advances to the NYS Class AAA Far West Regional and will play the Section VI champion.
