WEBSTER, N.Y. — Clare Magee hurled a three-hit shutout, and Penfield avenged an earlier loss with a 9-0 victory over previously unbeaten Webster Schroeder (No. 2 NYSSWA Class AA).
Magee struck out three without issuing a walk, and the Patriots (10-5), a seven-seed a year ago that lost in the first round of sectionals, won their third straight and eighth in the past nine games.
“This is a monumental win for our program,” first-year head coach Steve Newman said of the victory over the reigning Section V Class AA champions. “This shows that we’re here, and we’re going to be here for a while. If you’re going to go through the sectional bracket, you’re going to have to pay attention to where Penfield is.”
After surrendering a leadoff hit in the first, Magee retired six straight batters and 10 of the next 11.
At the same time, Penfield’s bats put two runs on the board in the first and three more in the second.
“It’s the style of play,” Newman said of the Penfield offense. “We believe that we can use our legs, our speed as a weapon. We can small-ball you. We can put balls in gaps. We can put balls over your head.”
Junior catcher Zoe VonDerlinn finished 3-for-4 at the plate including a leadoff double that sparked a three-run Penfield (No. 20 NYSSWA Class AA) second. Addison Young, Stephanie Coughlin and Ella Maley followed with consecutive singles as the Patriots (10-5) sent eight to the plate in the frame.
Mackenzie Whitehead’s two-out, two-run single made it a 5-0 game.
“You can’t really take one thing away from us,” Newman said. “We’re ready to come at you in many different ways.”
Six days earlier, Liana DeValder struck out 10 over seven innings of two-hit ball in Schroder’s 9-1 win over Penfield. DeValder played centerfield in Wednesday’s rematch.
“A win is a win,” Newman said. “Even if you look back at the last time we played them, we had bases loaded with nobody out in the fourth inning. We let that slip away. That turned the game. They came back and put up a five spot which gave them separation. If we came through, it’s a whole different game. I think we’re very evenly-matched even if Liana is pitching.”
Coughlin went 3-5 with an RBI and two runs scored out of the leadoff spot. Maley was 2-5 with an RBI and three runs. Whitehead drove in three as part of a 2-3 effort. Megan Clark tripled, drove in a run and scored twice.
“Our offense can do some damage,” Newman said.

Addison Young went 2-4 in the win.
DeValder, Amber Kohlmeier and Julianna Frumusa had a hit apiece for Schroeder (13-1), the top seed in Class AA.
The Warriors will host Lancaster of Section VI next Monday. A 6:15 p.m. first pitch is scheduled.
Penfield, the second seed in AA, hosts Irondequoit for a 5:30 p.m. start on Friday.
With Schroeder’s loss and Bishop Kearney/Archangel also falling on Wednesday, Oakfield-Alabama (7-0) remains as the only unbeaten team in Section V Softball.
