ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Elizabeth Gleghorn knows she won’t have much down time this week.
With five Advanced Placement (AP) exams and four softball games, Rush-Henrietta’s senior catcher is getting a preview of what life will be next year when she’s playing at Le Moyne College.
Gleghorn and her Royal Comet teammates passed their test on the diamond, Tuesday afternoon.
“It’s a busy life for student-athletes,” she said after Rush-Henrietta’s 8-5 victory over Spencerport. “It’s all right. We’re tough.”
Gleghorn was one of four Rush-Henrietta players to connect for two hits in the win. She finished 2-for-4 including a single in a three-run fourth when R-H put some distance between themselves and the Rangers.
“That inning was us knowing that we had to get ahead,” she said. “We needed some insurance because it was kind of close. We know they’re a tough team. They fight really hard. We knew if we let them stay close, they would come back. They have some pretty strong hitters. We wanted to be aggressive.”
Leading 4-2, younger sister Audrey Gleghorn worked a leadoff walk and stole second before Kadyn Hartel also received a free pass. The elder Gleghorn singled through the left side to load the bases.
Liz Rinella brought home the first run of the inning with an RBI groundout. Hartel scored on Kate Militello’s single to left. Kyla Piedici walked to load the bases again, and Kaylee Hartman capped the scoring with an RBI groundout of her own.
One day after falling to Webster Schroeder, 15-3, R-H improved to 10-4 on the season.
“Yesterday, we faced a really tough team,” Gleghorn said of Schroeder which is 13-0. “Today was another chance to get back at it. We were trying to lock-in on defense. We’re balancing the fact that we have so many games, and we’re trying to save pitchers. Yesterday, we used a bunch of different pitchers. We had to get back into playing aggressively.”
Hartel went 2-2 on the day with a triple, a walk, two RBI and two runs scored. The senior also struck out seven without issuing a walk in a complete-game effort. She allowed five runs (four earned) on eight hits.
Rinella and Militello had two hits and two RBI apiece. Audrey Gleghorn scored twice. Lillian Knope doubled and scored. Elizabeth Brown singled and scored.
