ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Roberts Wesleyan University is proud to announce the launch of its new women’s flag football team, set to begin competition in Spring 2026. As an NCAA emerging sport, flag football is rapidly gaining national momentum, and Roberts is proud to be among the first institutions in the region to offer athletic scholarships for the sport.
Flag football’s profile has soared in recent years, most notably when it will debut as an official sport in the upcoming 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. This global milestone offers athletes new opportunities for elite-level competition.
“We’re thrilled to bring women’s flag football to Roberts,” said Bob Segave, Executive Director of Athletics at Roberts Wesleyan University. “This program opens new doors for female student-athletes who want to compete while pursuing their academic and personal callings.”
The inaugural flag football season will consist of five to ten games against other NCAA collegiate programs in the Spring 2026 season. Flag football is one of the fastest-growing sports for young women nationwide and in the region at the high school and college levels.
Athletic scholarships will be available to student-athletes starting in Fall 2025, with recruitment efforts already underway. The team will begin practicing in the Fall of 2025, leading up to its first competitive season in Spring 2026. A head coach will be announced in the coming months.
“We’re breaking new ground to give young women the opportunity to compete in a sport that’s gaining national attention and Olympic recognition,” Segave added.
