ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Joey Vigerzi led three in double figures with 21 points, and host Gates Chili defeated Greece Arcadia, 73-53 on Monday night.
With the win, Gates (6-3), which opened the season with victories in five of its first six games, stopped a two-game skid.
“We didn’t like losing two in a row,” said first-year Gates head coach Bill Lewis. “We wanted to prove who we are. We’re a young team. We’re growing. That was the message in practice on Saturday, all the way through to today.”
Vigerzi finished a pair of layups to highlight a 9-0 run late in the second quarter as the Spartans opened a 17-point advantage at 36-19 heading into the locker room.
“In the locker room before the game, we talked about how the big thing was to be us,” Lewis said. “We don’t want to play another team’s game, play our game.”
Leading 24-16, Derrik Davis hit a 3-pointer from the wing. Vigerzi followed with a putback off his own miss. Davis converted a steal and layup, and Vigerzi finished in the open floor as the Spartans scored on four straight possessions.

“The message was to start the game off playing good defense that we know we can and make them play a Gates Chili style of game,” Lewis said.
Vigerzi poured in 11 of his game-high 21 points in the third quarter. The junior guard connected five times from the floor including once behind the 3-point arc during the eight-minute frame.
His three from the left wing pushed the lead to 20 at 49-29, and he followed with a steal and layup for the largest lead of the night.
Vigerzi added four rebounds and four assists to the effort. Tremier Lewis finished with 12 points, six rebounds and three steals. Davis had eight points, four rebounds, three assists, two steals and two blocks. Jaylen Givens contributed 10 points.
“They’re hard workers,” Lewis said of his team. “There’s no quit in them even when things are going bad. We haven’t had a kid miss practice. They’re always here. They’re always working. They get along. They love each other. It’s a family. We’re young. Hopefully, it continues to go that way. Hopefully, we can make some noise as we continue to learn and grow.”

Gates will travel to play at Spencerport on Wednesday. A 7:15 tip-off is scheduled.
Jahan Wilson led Arcadia (3-9) with 20 points. Xavier Smith accounted for nine points.
“We’re on the right path,” said Titans’ head coach Al Nash. “We got to learn that we got to play through our big guy (Smith) first and then we play off that. We got to trust him that he’s going to make the right plays. It’s about trusting each other.”
