PENFIELD, N.Y. — Stephen LeBrecht scored 11 of his 20 points in the third quarter as Lyons boys’ basketball (4-3) pulled away from a one-possession game and went on to beat Rochester Academy Charter School (RACS), 99-73 as part of the Penfield Holiday Invitational, Friday.

Coming out of the locker room with a 41-38 lead at halftime, LeBrecht took a post feed from Jah Jah Smith and finished through contact in the lane. Next trip down the floor, the junior guard/forward converted 1-of-2 free throws before connecting on a traditional 3-point play two trips later.

LeBrecht scored the first seven points of the quarter for Lyons.

Getting the ball to LeBrecht was what Lyons head coach Dean Schott II wanted to see in order to counter the attention that junior big man JJ Johnson gets from opposing defenses.

“JJ gets double and triple-covered,” Schott said. “Before the game, we talked about having JJ flash high and Stephen go low. For some reason, we didn’t want to run that and make the pass in the first half.

“At halftime, we drew it up again. We wanted to run it every time down until they (RACS) made an adjustment. We ran it four straight times and it worked every time.”

For Schott, the game was another in the development of his young backcourt. The Lions graduated Mikey Briggs, Dez Bell and Devyn Williams from last year’s state semifinalist.

Saturday’s game was an opportunity for Smith, Contrell Parker, Jr. and Stavell LeBrecht to grow into those roles.

“We will have film tomorrow and see the success rate we had when the ball went inside,” Schott said. “We’re going to be good by the end of the year, real good. Only if it (the ball) goes inside-out.”

Johnson logged a double-double with 28 points and 11 rebounds. The junior center also blocked five shots.

LeBrecht had 13 rebounds, five steals and three assists. Stavelle LeBrecht added 17 points. Parker had 16 points. Jarwil Sirmons (5), Smith (4) and Braden Bookmiller (2) also scored for Lyons.

Rochester Academy’s Joe Aiken led all scorers with 41 points. The senior guard hit four 3-pointers and converted 13-of-14 free throws.
