BROCKPORT, N.Y. Lydia Childs scored 13 of her team-high points in the first half when Brockport girls’ basketball built a double-digit lead heading into the locker room on the way to a 54-42 victory over Brighton, Friday night.
With the win, Brockport clinched a spot in Saturday’s championship game of its Katie Sweeting Tournament.
“The effort was outstanding,” said Brockport head coach Tom Velletri. “We’re young. We got a lot to work on, but I’m very pleased with the effort.”
Childs connected six times from the floor and was one of seven different Blue Devils who scored in the opening 16 minutes of play.
“We wanted to come out fast, be aggressive defensively and attack offensively,” Velletri said. “They did that, and it worked out for us.”
Janelle Laureano connected on a 3-pointer and added another basket in the second quarter as part of an eight-point effort on the night. Hannah Carpenter accounted for two of her 10 points in the second quarter, and Alexis Hassall scored all six her points in the first two quarters.
Brockport led 33-9 at halftime.
“We preach being unselfish, and they’re good about it,” Velletri said. “The style that we’re playing, everybody’s going to get opportunities for shots.”
Keira Wilson and Sophia Wilson scored four apiece in the win. Gigi Harris (3), Ella Waite (3) and Stella Szabo (1) also scored for Brockport.
Childs grabbed 10 rebounds for a double-double.
