ONTARIO CENTER, N.Y. — Avery Bustamante and Charley Kelly scored a goal apiece as host Wayne pulled away from a scoreless tie at half and went on to defeat Newark, 2-0 in Finger Lakes East action, Wednesday night.

Bustamante connected on his third goal of the season less than 13 minutes into the second half. The score helped Wayne stop the momentum that Newark had started to build late in the first half.

“We were playing the body too much in the first half, too many fouls,” said Wayne head coach Jay Marino. “I told them that at halftime. They listened and did what we needed to do.”

Newark worked for a free kick 33 yards out within the first two minutes of the second stanza. A corner kick followed five minutes later then another free kick this one from 20 yards out.

The Eagles switched the flow of the game with one counter attack that resulted in a corner kick.

Caelen Crane then played a service from the right flag, and Bustamante, at the near post, used a bicycle kick to put the ball in the back of the net.

“I was on the keeper,” Bustamante said of the position he established before the kick. “I saw the cross coming in. Nobody was around me. The keeper kinda backed up, and I knew I just had to let it fly. I’m not going to give a chance of a 50-50 ball when I can just put in the back of the net.”

Bustamante’s goal kickstarted the Wayne offense.

Moments later, Sammy Cypressi redirected a Blade Surowiec cross with a header that sailed just over the cross bar.

The win came after Wayne (5-1) dropped a 4-nil decision to Mendon late last week.

“The Mendon game showed a couple of our weaknesses,” Marino said. “We worked on that in practice, and it showed tonight.”

Newark entered play averaging better than five goals per game. Ninth-grade keeper Zach Shoop made five saves for his fourth shutout of the season.

“Our backs played well,” Marino said referring to defenders Ian Lewis, Nick Caine, Brian Dennie and Isaac White. “They did a great job of supporting Zach and helping him get comfortable in that position.

Crane also assisted on the Kelly goal.

The loss was the first this season for Newark (6-1).

“We had opportunities; we just didn’t finish,” said Newark head coach Mike Palmer. “One time we hit the post. Couple times we missed barely. We didn’t follow a couple shots.

They capitalized on the opportunities they had. Wayne is an awesome program. They’ve been an awesome program.”

Wayne hosts reigning Class AA champion, Churchville-Chili for a 6:30 p.m. start on Saturday.

Newark stays on the road and plays at Geneva next Monday. A 6:30 p.m. kickoff is scheduled.
