Two athletes from the Rochester area concluded their Paris Olympics on Saturday.
The first, Naples-born Megan Musnicki of the USA Women’s Eight rowing team, took part in the gold medal final, looking for her third Olympic medal after winning gold in London and Rio de Janeiro. It was not to be- the American boat finished fifth out of six at the Vaires-sur-Marne Nautical Stadium, 7.34 seconds behind the gold medal-winning Romanians and 2.22 seconds behind Great Britain for a bronze.
The other Rochester-area athlete active on Saturday, Pittsford’s Magnus Sheffield, finished 42nd in the Men’s Road Race, 7:23 behind gold medal cyclist Remco Evenepoel (Belgium). It was the second event of the Olympics for the Europe-based professional, he’d earlier finished 16th in the Men’s Time Trial on July 27.
Although Musnicki and Sheffield’s Olympics are finished, it isn’t the end of the games for Rochester’s Olympians, with two more athletes still to compete. The first of them, Rush-Henrietta sprinter Lanae-Tava Thomas, runs for Jamaica (where she was born before moving to the United States as a teenager) in the heats of the 200 meters at 4:55 A.M. with coverage online (with a valid TV subscription), on Peacock, and on USA Network.
