Parker Zeiser drove in two as a six-run deficit was cut to three and the tying run brought to the plate, but Greece Post 468 was not able to complete the rally in a 7-5 loss to the Clinton County Mariners in the American Legion New York State semifinal at Conlon Field in Binghamton, New York on Tuesday.
With the loss, two-time reigning Greece Post (22-2) saw its season come to an end. Greece was looking to become the second team in New York American Legion Baseball history to win three or more state titles in a row. Greece had won 21 straight games heading into Tuesday’s matchup. The seven runs allowed were the most surrendered by Post 468 this season.
Zeiser plated Steven Kraus and Jeffrey Broadnax with a two-out single as part of a three-run frame.
Trailing 7-1, Brody Froman reached on a one-out hit by pitch. Kraus put a pair of runners on base with a two-out single, and Broadnax started the scoring with a double. Andrew Lenhard walked to load the bases and set the stage for Zeiser.
Brady Gerig walked and scored on a Froman sacrifice fly in the seventh for the game’s final margin.
Derrick Allen doubled and scored in the fourth inning.
Clinton County’s Landen Duprey finished 2-for-2 with a pair of home runs and five RBI to lead the Mariners. Frankie Martinez doubled, walked and scored twice. Jake Frecehette struck out three over six innings to pick up the win.
Clinton County lost to Henry P Smith Post 24, 4-3 in the state championship game.
The Rockland Pirates won three state titles from 2016-18 and five straight from 1990-1994.
