Catcher Riley Adams homered twice and pitcher Rico Garcia escaped a bases-loaded ninth as the Rochester Red Wings won their fifth game of their last six, 9-6, over the Worcester Red Sox on Wednesday.
Adams, sent down when Drew Millas received a call-up to the Washington Nationals on June 2, hit a three-run shot in the top of the third to give the Red Wings a 4-2 lead and later connected on a solo shot in the top of the sixth to put the Wings up 5-4. The 27-year-old Californian finished the night 4-for-4 with four RBI, three runs scored, and a walk.

Despite Adams’ home runs, the WooSox kept pace throughout the game, erasing Red Wings leads four times before a Jack Dunn sacrifice fly, and a two-RBI double by Travis Blankenhorn in the eighth put Rochester ahead 9-6. Worcester threatened again in the ninth, loading the bases with one out, but Wings reliever Rico Garcia escaped by striking out Mark Contreras and then forcing a groundout from Chase Meidroth to secure his eighth save of the season.
First baseman Juan Yepez also starred for the Wings, going 3-for-5 with a double and a solo home run in the seventh as part of a two-RBI night. Darren Baker singled, walked twice, and stole his 21st base of the season, tied for second in the International League.
The Red Wings are now 31-26, good for third in IL North. It’s the first time the Red Wings have been five or more games over .500 this season.
Rochester continues the Worcester series on Thursday at 12:15 P.M. The Red Wings starter is unknown, but Worcester expects to send up left-hander Zach Penrod, just called up from AA. The game is free for registered users as part of Major League Baseball’s Free Game of the Day program through MLB.TV and MiLB.tv.
