ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Jordan Howe struck out 13 without issuing a walk, and the Brighton offense pounded out 21 hits to clinch a spot in the Section V Baseball Class AA quarterfinals.
Howe allowed one run on five hits in the win.
“He got ahead in the count on just about everybody,” Brighton head coach Jason Wasserman said after the No. 12 Bruins defeated No. 5 Wilson, 21-1, Sunday. “When you can do that and throw your off-speed, you’re going to be in good shape.”
After giving up a run in the third, the senior right-hander did not allow a runner past second for the remainder of the game.
“Jordan has a nice slider,” Wasserman said. “That’s his No. 1 pitch which is different from other pitchers around. He threw strikes and no walks. He was able to get guys outs.”
Wes Sturrup started the scoring with a two-run single in the third. The Bruins took a 4-1 lead into the fifth before scoring eight times to put the game out of reach.
“I was a little worried early in the game,” Wasserman said. “Our guys weren’t hitting early. Then they figured it out as the game went on.
“The last three or four days in the cage, we have been working on line drives and line drives. Finally, they broke through and were able to do that.”
Sturrup finished 3-for-4 out of the leadoff spot with a double, three RBI and three runs scored.
Will Pecor was 2-for-5 with a double, triple, three RBI and two runs scored. John Ahrens went 3-for-5 with a double, three RBI and a run scored.
“We got it going today,” Wasserman said. “It was a nice day for that.”
Garrett Zielinski was 2-for-3 with a walk, two RBI and three runs scored. Grady Hopkin went 2-3 with a double, two RBI and two runs scored. Brodie Kamm and Abram Levy both doubled and drove in two runs. Levvy also scored twice. Jack Edelstein was 2-for-2 with a walk, RBI and two runs scored. Sal Burge singled, walked, drove in a run and scored once.
Wilson’s Hansel Benitez-Lozano was 2-for-2 with a double and a run scored for the Wildcats. Jhandry Yamarte-Villabos singled and drove in a run. Eudi Martinez-Fernandez was 2-for-3.
Brighton will host No. 13 Hilton in the quarterfinals. A 5 PM first pitch is scheduled Tuesday at Buckland Park.
