HENRIETTA, N.Y. — Connor Sackett (Rochester, N.Y./Fairport) capped a five-run fifth inning with an RBI triple, the sophomore catcher’s fourth of five extra-base hits over three games. Monroe Community College Baseball sent 10 batters to the plate in the frame and took a lead it did not surrender before eventually winning 5-3 in Game 1 of a scheduled at Tribune Field, Saturday.
It was the lone bright spot on a weekend that saw MCC (9-8) drop two of three at home in NJCAA Division II action.
Trailing 2-0, CJ Phelps (Rochester, N.Y./McQuaid Jesuit) led the inning with a base hit and gave way to pinch-runner, Julien Mendoza (Fairport, N.Y./Fairport). Evan Brock (Rochester, N.Y./Rush-Henrietta) singled and one out later, Joe Wintermute (Rochester, N.Y./Irondequoit) started the MCC scoring with a base hit. Joe Grzeskowiak (Rochester, N.Y./Rush-Henrietta) then knotted the game with a run-scoring single.
Wintermute scored on a wild pitch, and Grzeskowiak came home on a Brody Froman (Rochester, N.Y./Irondequoit) RBI ground out.
Chuckie Sobaszek (Rochester, N.Y./Rush-Henrietta) allowed three runs on five hits and four walks over five innings to pick the win. The freshman left-hander struck out two in his longest outing to date and improved to 2-0 on the season.

Lucas West (Auburn, N.Y./Auburn) fanned four over two shutout innings of relief to pick up the save.
Brock went 2-for-3 in the game. Tobey Wright (Rochester, N.Y./Rush-Henrietta) singled and walked in the win.
Sackett went 1-for-3 with a triple and RBI in Game 2 (a 17-1 loss in five innings). This came one day after he posted a 3-for-4 effort with a double, two triples, two runs scored and two RBI in a 15-8 loss.
“I’m happy to see Connor having success,” MCC head coach Dave Brust said. “He has worked hard to develop his game, and the results are starting to show.”
Sackett tripled and later scored on a Wintermute base hit to tie Friday’s scheduled nine-inning contest at six in the fifth inning.
The four triples in three games is the most by a Tribune since 2013 when Vinnie Bomasuto collected two triples in the second game of a doubleheader against Erie Community College and then two days later two more triples in a nightcap against Genesee Community College. Bomasuto eventually set the program record with 18 triples that year.
Monroe lost Friday’s game, 15-8.
Froman was 2-for-4 with three RBI. Wintermute doubled and drove in two. Grzeskowiak was 2-for-4 with a triple, RBI and run scored. Phelps doubled, walked and scored. Lucas Brown (Toronto, ON/Humberside Collegiate) singled and drove in a run. Kaleb Juliano (Webster, N.Y./Webster Schroeder) added a double.
