Canandaigua uses late run to beat Webster Schroeder

A late-game adjustment on the offensive end paid dividends as the Canandaigua girls’ basketball team avenged an earlier loss with a 56-42 victory over host Webster Schroeder in Monroe County Division I action, Tuesday night.

When the Gray Wolves needed to counter Schroeder’s pressure on the perimeter, Macy Falk made a move into the post. The junior forward responded with eight of her 12 points.

“We went from five-out to a four-out, one-in,” said Canandaigua head coach Mike Brennan. “After that Macy started scoring because we were able to get to the paint and give her the ball where she could finish.”

Leading by four after three quarters of play, Falk pushed the advantage to nine with her first of four buckets on consecutive possessions. She took back-to-back high-low feeds from teammate Kyleigh Chapman and finished to put the game out of reach at 52-39.

“We needed a spark offensively,” Brennan said. “They were kinda on to what we were doing. I said ‘Let’s change it up.’ That was the time to do it. It worked out this time.”

Schroeder, the reigning New York State Class AA champions, took a 57-56 decision when the two teams met in early January. That setback was a fourth-straight for Canandaigua (12-6) which is currently ranked No. 15 NYSSWA Class AA. The Gray Wolves also fell to Victor (No. 8 NYSSWA Class AA) along with Shenendehowa (No. 11 NYSSWA Class AAA) and Albany (No. 18 AAA) during that stretch from late December into the new year.

“To be within one point of them and then be able to win it, we took a little confidence in that we can play with some of the more talented teams in the section. We were losing to state-ranked teams, all good experiences.”

Eily Hubler scored eight of her team-high 15 points in the second quarter. The junior point guard connected on a pair of 3-pointers as Canandaigua built a 27-17 lead heading into halftime.

Schroeder (12-6/No. 12 NYSSWA Class AA) stormed back in the third. Bria Watkins grabbed an offensive rebound on the break and scored on a putback for two of her game-high 18 points. Kylie Clement connected on 1-of-2 free throws then Addie Morgan scored eight of her 10 points over the next three minutes. The junior guard hit a triple from the top of the key before before converting a traditional 3-point play. Her jumper in the lane tied the game at 29.

“I was so proud of the way they battled back,” said Schroeder head coach Codi Mrozek. “We couldn’t find our rhythm shooting-wise, and they did. I was really proud of how we battled through that third quarter. We didn’t quit. We could’ve gone two different ways, and we battled back.”

Julia Geitner hit a 3-pointer and Chapman added a pair of free throws to give Canandaigua a 34-30 lead after three quarters.

Chapman scored off an inbound play to start the fourth-quarter scoring. Leah Sheridan hit a three and Hubler added an and-one for a 44-35 advantage.

With Canandaigua looking to the post, Falk iced the game from there.

“Five-out is what we do,” Brennan said. “But we have that wrinkle available to us.”

Canandaigua played without starting forward Macy Bacon who has missed the past six games since suffering an injury against Hilton on January 16th.

“We hope to have her back soon,” Brennan said. “We miss her. We’re a better team with her. Silver lining is other kids are stepping up.”

Canandaigua hosts Churchville-Chili on Friday and Fairport next week to close out the regular season. Sectionals open on Tuesday, February 20th with the Class AA final scheduled for Saturday, March 2nd.

“Whoever wins the double-A bracket is going to be battle-tested,” Brennan said.

Schroeder hosts Bishop Kearney on Friday then travels to Hilton next Tuesday.
