This week’s rankings from the New York State Sportswriters Association include 17 Section V squads. Of those, 11 will take the court this weekend including one head-to-head matchup and an inter-sectional tilt featuring teams numbered among the best in the state.

Le Roy (No. 22 NYSSWA Class B) welcomes Livingston County Athletic Association (LCAA) rival Avon for a rematch, Friday. The Oatkan Knights (12-2), winners of eight straight, will look to avenge a 42-34 loss when the two teams met in early December. Avon (14-1/No. 6 NYSSWA Class B) has taken back-to-back decisions since falling to Lyons, 51-45.

Le Roy is coming off a four-point win (62-58) over Dansville earlier in the week and a 78-73 victory at York (No. 18 NYSSWA Class C) last week.

Avon won at Rochester Prep (52-48) this past Tuesday.

Le Roy scores 64.2 points per game and allows 50.2. Avon accounts for 61.7 points and limits opponents to 46.9.

Avon is 4-0 in LCAA Division II and a win gives the Braves a two-game advantage over Le Roy (3-1).

The game features a pair of 1,000-point career scorers in Avon’s Michael Rowland (1,019) and Le Roy’s Merritt Holly, Jr. (1,554 points).

Rowland finished with a double-double and scored a game-high 17 points when the two teams met earlier. Holly, who has topped the 40-point mark in three separate games this season, was held to 13 points on 4-of-11 shooting in Avon’s victory.

A 7 PM tipoff is scheduled.

York (11-3) will look to end the third-longest active winning streak (per NewYorkStateHighSchoolBasketball.com) in the state when the Golden Knights host reigning NYS Class C champion Randolph (No. 1 NYSSWA Class C) on Saturday. Randolph has won 17 straight games dating back to last February when the Cardinals lost to Section VI foe Salamanca, 59-48.

All three of York’s losses have come to teams currently ranked in the state: Avon (62-47), Le Roy (78-73) and Wheatland-Chili (No. 17 Class C/49-46). The Golden Knights score 73.6 points per game and allows 51.1.

Randolph scores 58.3 and allows 40.9. Drew Hind scores 22.2 points per game to lead the Cardinals.

A 2:30 PM tip-off is scheduled at York.
