ONEONTA, NY – Sparked by hot 3-point shooting by sophomore Tyler Putney and graduate student Logan Blankenberg gave the Nazareth University Men’s Basketball team an early lead and the Golden Flyers raced to a convincing 82-65 win at Hartwick Saturday in an Empire 8 matchup.
Hartwick (1-7 overall, 0-2 E8) took an early lead with three free throws in the first minute of the game but Nazareth (4-3 overall, 2-0 E8) responded with a 16-2 run to take a double-digit lead at 16-5 early in the game.
Nazareth was 7-for-14 from 3-point range while Hartwick was 0-for-8 from beyond the line in the opening half.
The Golden Flyers took a 40-26 lead into the halftime break.
In the second half, Hartwick battled back and trimmed the lead to three points at 43-40 just four minutes into the period.
Nazareth answered with a 12-3 run to regain the advantage. The run was highlighted by a 3-pointer by sophomore Jaylen Savage and a three-point play by Blankenberg.
A pair of 3-pointers by sophomore Solomon McFarlane extended the lead to 16 points at 65-49 with 8:21 left to play.
Savage nailed a 3-pointer at the 5:31 mark to give Nazareth a 20-point lead at 72-52.
Savage and Blankenberg each scored 16 points while graduate student Jordan Haggard and Putney had 15 and 14 points respectively. McFarlane also finished in double figures with 12 points. The five players combined to shoot 11-for-20 from 3-point range.The Golden Flyers are off until a midseason trip to Florida to face St. John’s (Minnesota) and Dickinson December 19 and 20.
