IRONDEQUOIT, N.Y — Maddie Schurr’s goal in the 93rd minute was the difference as No. 12 Warsaw defeated No. 5 Bishop Kearney, 2-1 in Class C1 girls’ soccer action, Tuesday.
Schurr stepped in front of a clearing attempt and one-timed a shot inside the near post for the game winner.
“All I had in mind was to shoot,” the eighth-grade midfielder said. “Don’t take a touch, just shoot because they are going to attack me if I give them the chance.”
The play started along the right flank where Natalie Lonneville kept the play alive for the Tigers. The eighth-grade forward won a ball from a Kearney defender and went to the touch line to play a service. The cross was intercepted, but Schurr was in the right spot to make the play.
“It feels awesome,” she said. “To be an eighth-grader and get a goal that moves the team on in sectionals is great.”

Warsaw (5-12-0) will play either Bloomfield or Campbell-Savona in the quarterfinals on Friday.
“We’ve worked really hard all season,” said Warsaw head coach Sue Ackerman. “We have a lot of new players. We have young players. We lost half of a team because we had so many seniors last year. We’re building, so it feels good.”
The Tigers left school at 1 pm for the 3 pm start at Kearney and showed no signs of rust after the 45-mile drive. Ellie Tangeman found the back of the net in the seventh to give the visitors an early lead.
“Getting that goal early was important,” Ackerman said. “It really got us going.”
Kaitlyn Treutlein assisted on the goal – Tangeman’s eighth tally of the season.
Gigi Grieder provided the equalizer for Kearney with 16:05 remaining in the match.

“It was hard when we gave up that goal,” Ackerman said. “They held it together and played hard. We were able to pull out the win because of how hard we played.
Brenna Ackerman-Gay made 10 saves for the win.
