BRIGHTON, N.Y. — Alyssa Doody finished with two goals and an assist as Webster Schroeder girls’ soccer erased an early deficit for a 4-2 victory over host Brighton, Tuesday night.
Trailing 1-nil early, Doody leveled the match in the ninth minute with an assist from teammate Leah Marcell. Doody then converted on a free kick from just outside the 18-yard box less than seven minutes before halftime to give the Warriors (3-0) a lead they did not surrender.
“It was nice to see us bounce back, dealing with the weather conditions, the heat,” Schroeder head coach Kent Brown said. “The kids pulled themselves together without the coaches having to give a lot of input from the sidelines.”

Morgan Tara added to the lead less than six minutes into the second half with an assist from Sasha Zilist, and Kenzie Browne redirected a cross from Doody to make it a 4-1 game.

Brown credited midfielders Kylie Clement, Jocelyn Gudyka and Marcell for winning balls in the middle third and allowing the offense to build from the wings.
“The field was really squeezed,” the 31st-year coach said. “It was really tight. There wasn’t a lot of space for the triangle to try and build the ball out. When they were able to find space, they were able to get the ball in behind Brighton’s backline.”
Browne’s goal was the sophomore forward’s first at the varsity level.
“Kenzie has worked her tail off,” Brown said. “She had an earlier opportunity. She came to the bench, and was sort of mad at herself that she didn’t score. That little flick, she does that in practice a lot. It’s a great little shot. She doesn’t try to wind it up. She just changes direction on the ball. It worked. It spun right in the side.”

Brighton’s Izzy Alexandre started the scoring in the fifth minute. Finn Cregan connected with 2:13 remaining in the match on a blast from 25 yards out that made it a 4-2 game. The junior midfielder nearly made it a one-goal game moments later when she let fly with another rocket that caught the underside of the crossbar and caromed just outside the goal line.
“Brighton is really good in the final third,” Brown said. “Finn and Izzy cause all sorts of problems. Every time they get there, they can score.”
Brighton fell to 0-3 on the young season with previous losses to Pittsford Mendon (4-1) and Fairport (7-2).
“I thought we played with heart today,” Bruins head coach Rita Kladstrup said. “We played hard. We’re coming off two very hard losses. Today in talking to the girls at the end of the game, it was such a positive atmosphere. We’re stepping in the right direction. Not the result we wanted, but we’re going to get there.”
