Notre Dame Batavia and Scio/Friendship to battle for spot in Far West regional

Genesee Region meets Allegany County Division II when Notre Dame-Batavia faces Scio/Friendship for a spot in the state quarterfinals. Here’s the breakdown:

How they arrived here: Notre Dame Batavia outlasted No. 5 Alfred-Almond, 3-2 in the quarterfinals, before knocking off No. 1 Keshequa, 7-4 in the semifinals. The Fighting Irish defeated No. 2 Lyndonville, 5-2 to claim the Class D1 title on Saturday. Scio/Friendship defeated No. 5 Andover/Whitesville 8-0 in the semifinals, before securing the Class D2 title with a 13-0 win over No. 3 Charles G. Finney on Saturday.

Tempo and trends: Notre Dame-Batavia scores 9.4 runs per game and allows 3.8. The Fighting Irish have won their last three games since falling to Bishop Kearney to end the regular season. The team has recorded three shutouts and a +123-run differential for the season. Scio/Friendship scores 7.4 runs per game and allows 1.3. The team has won their last 12 games, with 10 shutouts and two runs allowed during that time. The team has allowed only 27 runs this season with 14 shutouts.

What’s at stake: The winner will play Section VI Champion in the 2023 NYSPHSAA Class D Far West Regional on Friday. The game is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. at Gowanda High School

History 101: Notre Dame-Batavia won the Far West Regionals in 2009, 2011 and 2012. The Fighting Irish went on to win the NYSPHSAA Class D Championship in 2012. Scio/Friendship is seeking its second straight trip to regionals.
