Garrett Clar led Victor to a program-first state title. Ryan Heath guided Irondequoit to the state championship game as well. The junior forward and senior guard are among 26 Section V student-athletes earned NYSSWA Large Schools’ honors as announced on Wednesday.
Clar averaged 17.4 points per game for the Blue Devils and was named to the New York State Class AA Sixth Team. The junior forward spearheaded a squad which claimed a program-first regional title and state championship. Clar led the Blue Devils to their first sectional title since 1978 as well. The 6-foot-2 forward netted 88 points in six postseason contests (14.7 points per match), including 19 in a 56-41 victory over Brentwood (XI) in the New York State Public High Schools Athletic Association (NYSPHSAA) semifinals.

Teammate Nick Leonard joined Clar on the All-State teams earning a spot on the Ninth Team. The junior forward averaged 8.7 points per match.
Franklin’s Sha’mere Freeman landed on the Eighth Team NYS Class AA. The senior guard amassed 24.7 points, six rebounds, six assists and four steals per game. Freeman was named the Rochester City Athletic Conference (RCAC) Division I Player of the Year as well.

Troy McPherson (Brighton) was named to the 11th Team Class AA. The senior guard finished second on the Bruins in scoring with 18.0 points per game.
Webster Schroeder’s Giovanni Schillaci earned a spot on the Class AA 15th Team. The senior guard led the Warriors to a Monroe County Division II title with a team-high 16.3 points per game (335 points total). Schillaci posted 3.9 RPG, 1.1 APG and 1.4 SPG appearing in all 20 regular season games to win Monroe County Division II Co-Player of the Year.
2022-23 NYSSWA BOYS’ LARGE SCHOOLS
Fairport’s Zac Ditzel (Honorable Mention), UPrep’s Chris Powell (Honorable Mention), Brighton’s Reggie Smith, Jr. (Honorable Mention), Franklin’s Terence Thompson (Honorable Mention) and Aquinas’ Mykel White (Honorable Mention) rounded out the list of Section V players named to the All-State Class AA Team.
Heath totaled 384 points, averaging 20.2 points per game along with 5.8 assists, 5.5 rebounds and two steals for the Eagles to top the local Class A selections with a spot on the NYSSWA Third Team. The senior guard earned Tournament Most Valuable Player in leading his squad to their third sectional title in the last seven years. This resulted in the Eagles’ third state final four appearance in the past seven seasons as well. Heath poured in 104 points in seven postseason contests (14.9 points per match), including 21 in a 67-52 victory over Webster Thomas in the class A1 sectional semifinals.
Senior Xavier Gissendanner joined Heath on the All-State teams earning an 11th Team nod. The 6-foot-4 guard accumulated 16.3 points, 1.4 assists, 5.4 rebounds and 1.3 steals per match.
Pittsford Mendon senior Jackson Green was named to the Sixth Team. The 6-foot-3 guard posted 18.6 points per game and shot 37.5 percent from three-point range. Green earned Monroe County Division III Player of the Year honors as well.

Greece Athena’s Zee Johnson (15th Team) Khorie Reaves (Eighth Team) landed on NYS Class A. Reaves led the Trojans in scoring with 376 points averaging 18.8 points per contest. Johnson finished third in team scoring with 226 points, averaging 11.9 points per game.
Monroe senior Jaquan Shears nabbed a 10th Team nod. The 6-foot-2 forward accrued 24.4 points per game in all 20 contests played and earned RCAC Division II Player of the Year.
East High’s Quentin Gordon-Smith was named to the 12th Team Class A. The senior guard led four players in double figures with 17.1 points per game (273 points in 16 matches).
Churchville-Chili senior Jason Gibbs earned a 13th Team nod. The 5-foot-10 guard scored 459 points, averaging 22.9 points per game along with 4.2 rebounds, 3.2 assists and 2.3 steals. Gibbs earned Co-Player of the Year honors for Monroe County Division II as well.
Eastridge senior Cordell Young was named to the 16th Team. The 5-foot-9 guard averaged 27.3 points, 6.5 rebounds, 3.2 assists and 2.6 steals per game for the Lancers. Young earned Monroe County Division IV Player of the Year as well.
Monroe’s Davion Jones (Honorable Mention) Webster Thomas’ Shawn Mason (Honorable Mention), East High’s Zion Parsons (Honorable Mention), Pittsford Sutherland’s Sam Pisanelli (Honorable Mention), Honeoye Falls-Lima’s Nolan Smith (Honorable Mention) and Spencerport’s Bryon Streb (Honorable Mention) rounded out the list of Section V players named to the All-State Class A Team.
