BRIGHTON, N.Y. — Tobey Wright (Henrietta, N.Y./Rush-Henrietta) connected on a one-out, two-run double, and host Monroe Community College (3-5) walked off with a doubleheader sweep (11-3/4-3) of Cayuga Community College in NJCAA Baseball action from Tribune Field on Friday.
Wright plated Joe Grzeskowiak (Henrietta, N.Y./Rush-Henrietta) and Lucas Brown (Toronto, ON/Humberside Collegiate Institute) with the tying and winning runs as the Tribunes erased a late-inning deficit to win their third straight game.
Trailing 3-2, Brown led the frame with a walk, and Grzeskowiak connected on his second hit of the game. Connor Kiefer (Buffalo, N.Y./City Honors) put runners in scoring position with a sacrifice bunt. Wright delivered with his sixth and seventh RBI of the season.
Matthew Salina (Webster, N.Y./Webster Schroeder) worked a scoreless inning and two-thirds in relief to pick up his first career win. Salina entered in the sixth with runners on the corners and one out. The right-hander struck out the first batter he faced and induced an infield pop-up to end the threat. He retired all five batters that came to the plate against him, struck out two and did not allow a ball out of the infield.
Dylan Wanat (Buffalo, N.Y./Williamsville North) tripled and scored on an Alex Simons (Webster, N.Y./Webster Schroeder) one-out single in the sixth as MCC pulled within one at 3-2.
CJ Phelps (Rochester, N.Y./McQuaid Jesuit) led the Monroe fifth with a double and scored one out later on a Grzeskowiak triple.
Lucas Connors (Brampton, ON/Heart Lake) started and struck out six over four innings of work. The right-hander allowed two runs on four hits and two walks.
Christian Blatter (Rochester, N.Y./McQuaid Jesuit) struck out one in a scoreless inning of relief work.
Wright’s walk-off put bookends on the afternoon for the first-year shortstop as he drove in Patrick May (Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W. Post) with a one-out double to start the scoring in Game 1. The Tribunes went on to send 13 to the plate and scored eight in the home half of the first stanza.
Avery Bowens (Rochester, N.Y./Eastridge) tripled in a run. Phelps added run with a single. Kiefer brought in another with a bases-loaded walk while May and Wright capped the frame with RBI singles.
Wright collected three hits in the opener along with Bowens, May and Ryan Stewart (Auburn, N.Y./Auburn High) adding two apiece as part of 12-hit attack.
Zach Allen (Greece, N.Y./McQuaid Jesuit) started and allowed one run on four hits over five innings to pick up his second win of the season in as many appearances on the mound. Will Russotti (Rochester, N.Y./McQuaid Jesuit) struck out one and did not allow a hit over two innings of relief work.
Wright finished 3-for-4 with three RBI in the opener. Bowens and May both went 2-for-3 with two RBI. Bowens scored three runs. May came home once. Stewart was 2-for-4. Kiefer singled, walked twice, drove in a run and scored another. Phelps had two RBI. Brown walked twice and scored a run.
Wanat collected three hits, a walk and a run scored in the twin bill.
May and Wright lead MCC with seven RBI apiece on the season.
Wright’s 11 hits tops the Tribune lineup.
With six hits and eight walks, Kiefer’s .567 on-base percentage leads Monroe. The sophomore also has team-bests with nine stolen bases and 10 runs scored.
