Jack Leasure Shooting and Skills Camp Championship Preview: Pembroke faces York for the Boys’ Class C2 Title

The York Knights are looking to win a second straight sectional title and fourth overall in program history.

One team is trying to go back-to-back, the other looking for its first ever. Top-seeded Pembroke and York meet to decide the 2023 Section V Class C2 Boys’ Basketball Championship. Here’s the breakdown:

No. 1 PEMBROKE DRAGONS (21-1/Genesee County I)
vs.
No. 2 YORK KNIGHTS (20-2/Livingston County III)

Current Streak: Pembroke has not lost a game since Dec. 6th, 2022, winning 21 straight. York has currently won nine straight games.

How they arrived here: Pembroke beat No. 8 Alexander, 81-55, in the quarterfinals and No. 5 Bolivar-Richburg, 61-39, in the semifinals. York overcame No. 7 Perry, 78-38, in the quarterfinals and No. 3 Oakfield-Alabama, 64-59, in the semifinals.

Players to Watch

Pembroke: Cayden Pfalzer 21.8 PPG, 5.3 RPG, 1.9 APG; Tyson Totten 20.3 PPG 4.9 RPG 2.4 APG; Chase Guzdek 10.2 PPG, 8.2 RPG; Avery Ferreira 7.5 PPG, 4.3 RPG, 1.3 APG; Jon Suro 6.4 PPG, 3.6 RPG, 8 APG.

York: Joe Bauer; Tyler Brady; Jake Pangrazio, 16.0 PPG; Connor Rodwell; Maddox Timothy 17.0 PPG;

Coaches: Matt Shay (Pembroke), Orman Ed (York)

History 101: Pembroke is looking to win its first sectional title in program history. The Dragons advanced to the 2018 Class C1 title game. When Pembroke takes the floor against York, it will be just under three months since its last loss. York won the 2022 Class C3 championship and will be looking for its fourth championship in program history.

What’s next: The winner advances to regional-qualifier action.

A 1 p.m. tip-off is scheduled at Blue Cross Arena on Sunday.
