Jack Leasure Shooting and Skills Camp Championship Preview: Webster Schroeder and Penfield to decide Girls’ Class AA title

One team is seeking its first sectional title in 47 years. The other is looking for its second championship in the last three seasons. Monroe County Division I rivals Webster Schroeder and Penfield will meet Saturday to decide the 2023 Section V Class AA Girls’ Basketball Championship. Here’s the breakdown:

No. 1 seed WEBSTER SCHROEDER WARRIORS (21-1/Monroe County Division I)
vs.
No. 2 seed
PENFIELD PATRIOTS (20-2/Monroe County Division I)

Scoring offense: Webster Schroeder (63.5 PPG), Penfield (61.4 PPG)

Scoring defense: Webster Schroeder (45.6 PPG), Penfield (42.5 PPG)

Current streak: Webster Schroeder has won seven straight. Penfield has won four straight.

How they got here: Webster Schroeder defeated No. 8 Victor, 56-39, in the quarterfinals before downing No. 5 Fairport, 73-69, in the semis. Penfield beat No. 10 Greece Arcadia/Olympia by a 69-28 score in the quarterfinals and took down No. 3 Bishop Kearney, 56-54, in the semifinals.

Webster Schroeder: Ava Gallup Jr. C 6.5 PPG; Addison Morgan So. G 8.3 PPG; Bria Watkins So. G 11.7 PPG; Mariah Watkins Jr. G 24.4 PPG

Penfield: Grace Alexander Sr. G 15.1 PPG; Emily Fordham Sr. G 8.5 PPG; Jackie Funk Sr. G 17.1 PPG; Ashley Kalvitis Jr. G 5.5 PPG

Coaches: Codi Mrozek (Webster Schroeder), Mark Vogt (Penfield)

History 101: Webster Schroeder is making its second straight sectional final appearance. The Warriors fell to Pittsford Mendon in last year’s class A title game. The Warriors are looking for their second sectional title in program history and first since 1976 when they won the Class A championship. Penfield is making its third championship appearance in the last four years and seeking its second block in that span. The Patriots made back-to-back title game appearances in 2020 and 2021, facing Bishop Kearney both times. Mark Vogt’s squad came up short in 2020 and came out on top in 2021.

What’s next: Winner will face the Section VI Class AA champion in the NYS Class AA Far West Regional.

A 7:45 p.m. tip off is scheduled at Rush-Henrietta High School.
