
One team is seeking its first sectional title in nine years. The other is looking for its first championship in 14 seasons. Monroe County Division III champion Pittsford Sutherland and Monroe County Division II champion Canandaigua will meet Saturday to decide the 2023 Section V Class A Girls’ Basketball Championship. How they got here: Pittsford Sutherland defeated No. 8 Pittsford Mendon, 44-38, in the quarterfinals before downing No. 12 Our Lady Of Mercy, 45-38, in the semis. Canandaigua beat No. 15 Wilson Magnet by a 90-28 score in the first round, took down No. 7 Brockport, 53-38, in the quarterfinals and defeated No. 11 Irondequoit, 63-40, in the semis.

History 101: Pittsford Sutherland is seeking its first sectional title since 2014 when the Knights won the class A1 championship. The Knights reigned supreme in all of New York State as well in 2014, winning the New York State Public High Schools Athletic Association title by defeating Williamsville South (VI), Maine-Endwell (IV) and Jamesville-DeWitt (III). Canandaigua is looking for its first championship since 2009 when the Braves won class AA. After securing the sectional block, the Braves advanced to the state semifinals before falling to eventual champion Copiague (XI).
What’s next: Winner will face the Section VI Class A champion in the NYS Class A Far West Regional.
A 2:30 p.m. tip off is scheduled at Rush-Henrietta High School.
