Jack Leasure Shooting and Skills Camp Championship Preview: Dansville and Hornell to battle for Girls’ B2 title

Two of the top three seeds will meet to decide the Class B2 championship. Dansville is seeking its second sectional title since 2019, and Hornell is looking to bounce-back from last year’s loss in the Class B1 finals. Both teams will face off on Saturday in the 2023 Section V Class B2 Girls’ Basketball Championship. Here’s the breakdown:

No. 1 seed DANSVILLE MUSTANGS (16-6/Livingston County Division I)
vs.
No. 3 seed
HORNELL RED RAIDERS (14-8/Livingston County Division I)

Scoring offense: Dansville (50.4 PPG), Hornell (60.8 PPG)

 Scoring defense: Dansville (39 PPG), Hornell (47.4 PPG)

Current Streak: Dansville has won three in a row and four of its last five. Hornell has won its last two.

How they arrived here: Dansville opened with a 56-45 victory over No. 9 Penn Yan in the quarterfinals before defeating No. 4 Wellsville, 51-38 in the semifinals. Hornell downed No. 6 Le Roy, 70-40 in the quarterfinals and knocked off No. 2 Mynderse, 61-56 in the semifinals.

Dansville: Emma Allen 5-foot-7 Jr. C/F 4.8 PPG, 6.1 RPG; Aynsley Belcher 6-foot Jr. C 12 PPG, 10.6 RPG ; Taylor Hamsher 5-foot-4 Fr. G 6.9 PPG, 1.4 SPG; Kali Meyer 5-foot-6 Jr. G 6.4 PPG; Chelsie Tyler 5-foot-6 Jr. G 12.8 PPG, 4.2 RPG, 21.8 SPG.

Hornell: Jordyn Dyring 5-foot-8 Fr. G 13.7 PPG, 3.6 APG, 4 RPG; Reagan Evingham 5-foot-7 eighth-grader F 6.5 PPG, 5.4 RPG, ; Lillian Hoyt 5-foot-7 So. G 9.3 PPG; Madelyn Moore 5-foot-9 Sr. C/F 10.4 PPG, 9 RPG, 3.5 SPG ; Selena Maldonado 5-foot-5 Fr. G 9.1 PPG, 5.8 APG, 4.8 APG, 3.4 SPG. 

Coaches: Arin Belden (Dansville), Jimmy Dagon (Hornell)

History 101: Dansville and Hornell met twice this year on January 20th and February 10th. The Mustangs took the first meeting, 44-43, and Hornell won the second meeting, 65-56.

Dansville is playing for its third sectional title and first since they won back-to-back championships in 2019 and 2020. Hornell is seeking its first title in program history.

What’s Next: The winner will play the Class B1 champion (either Waterloo or Palmyra-Macedon) in the NYS Class B Far West Regional Qualifier.

A 12:45 p.m. tip-off is scheduled at Rush-Henrietta High School.
