New Paltz, NY – The Golden Eagles bounced back on Saturday with a win over New Paltz, 83-78. They are now 18-5 overall on the season with a conference record of 13-3.
Both Jahidi Wallace and Mekhi Beckett lit up the scoreboard to spearhead the Brockport scoring effort. Wallace and Beckett both totaled 23 points and seven rebounds in the contest.
Tony Arnold filled the stat sheet with 15 points, eight rebounds, four assists, and three steals. Starters David Grady III and Colby Jordan combined for 15 points offensively.
The two SUNYAC opponents traded baskets for the early minutes of the game, with New Paltz holding a slim, 11-9, lead. Jahidi Wallace and Mekhi Beckett had it going in the first half, combining for 26 points in the half. However, the Hawks were hot from long range shooting 8-for-13 from deep in the first. They would enter halftime ahead on the scoreboard, 44-36.
In the second half, the Golden Eagles defend the 3-point shot more effectively as New Paltz went just 2-for-14 from deep the rest of the way. They trailed, 50-40, with 17:40 on the clock before starting to close the gap. By the midpoint of the second half, Brockport had snagged a 1-point lead thanks to a triple from Tony Arnold.
Continuously attacking the paint, the Green and Gold started to build a lead by going up 68-61 with just over seven minutes left to play. The Hawks wouldn’t go away easily, making it a 1-point game with 1:50 on the clock. The Golden Eagle defensive effort held New Paltz to just two points down the stretch. They would sink some key free throws to seal the deal, pulling out the 83-78 victory.
Brockport is back at home next weekend for the final two games of the regular season. Oswego and Buffalo State will come to The Vlog, as the Green and Gold look to clinch a first-round bye for the upcoming SUNYAC Tournament.
