ROCHESTER, NY – Freshman Jaylen Savage led the Nazareth Men’s Basketball team with 18 points and graduate student Jonathan Park added 15 points and 20 rebounds as the Golden Flyers posted a 94-88 win over St. John Fisher Saturday night in the annual Battle of the Beak fundraising game at Kidera Gym.
Nazareth (19-4 overall, 13-3 Empire 8) jumped out to an early lead and held the advantage for nearly the entire game as St. John Fisher (16-7, 12-4 Empire 8) could not overcome the strong shooting of Nazareth. The Golden Flyers hit nearly 50 percent (34-for-70) from the field in the game and more than 50 percent (17-for-33) in the second half to hold off the Cardinals.
For Park, who was honored prior to the start of the game for senior day, had his 14th double-double of the season on the strength of 7-for-9 shooting while Savage connected on 8-of-15 shots including several driving layups against the St. John Fisher defense.
Graduate student Zach Stenglein and senior Logan Blankenberg scored 17 points each as the duo combined for five 3-pointers and 13 of the 15 free throws by the Golden Flyers.
St. John Fisher’s Daniel Cook led all scorers with 21 points but missed a pair of shots in the closing minutes allowing Nazareth to pull away for the win.
The Cardinals played without their head coach over the final four minutes of the game after he picked up a pair of technical fouls and was ejected from the game.Nazareth will finish the regular season with a pair of road games at Hartwick (Friday) and Russell Sage (Saturday) before the start of the Empire 8 Tournament beginning February 21.
