ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Chris Powell scored eight of game-high 19 points during a decisive fourth-quarter run, and the University Preparatory Charter School for Young Men (UPrep) defeated host Edison Tech, 51-42 in non-league action Monday night.

With the game tied at 32, Powell scored UPrep’s next eight connecting on a pair of wing 3-pointers and converting twice from the free-throw line.

“We needed somebody to hit a big shot, and he did,” UPrep head coach Jerice Crouch said. “He sparked our run the rest of the way.”

Keone Manigault finished in the lane, then Powell drove baseline and dished to Quentin Nowden for two more. UPrep led 44-34.

The Griffins improved their record to 4-8 with their third win in the past four games. On Friday, UPrep fell to Greece Athena, 70-58.

“On Friday we let one get away,” Crouch said. “They (Athena) went on a run, and we didn’t stop them.”

Prior to that setback, UPrep had beaten a nine-win Franklin squad by a count of 84-81 and Bishop Kearney, another nine-win team, by 64-61.

“We’ve been playing a lot of really good teams. We let some slip away, I told them ‘just keep fighting, keep playing hard.’ If you keep playing hard, good things are going to happen. They came out here, played hard and competed.”

Four different players contributed points to UPrep’s attack in the fourth to close out the win. Manigault scored five points, and Gavin White added six points, seven assists and five rebounds.

Eight players in all contributed to the scoring.

“I tell them all the time that they all can play. They all can score. I don’t try and put limitations on them or put any guy in a box. That way they can go out there and have fun playing.”

Manigault finished the game with nine points. White had six. Gregory Bodine III also six points. Justin Hardy, Raymond Lopez, Jr. and Alexander Webb, Jr. rounded out UPrep’s scoring with two points apiece.

Powell grabbed six rebounds in the win.
