Caggiano scores career high in RIT loss

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – RIT junior guard Mark Caggiano scored a career-high 21 points in the Tigers 69-65 loss at Vassar, Saturday.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Vassar’s Avni Mustafaj gave the Brewers an 8-5 on his basket early in the first half.

Senior forward Kevin Ryan scored two straight buckets to give the Tigers a 10-8 lead.

Ben Freed scored on a layup to give Vassar a 15-13 lead.

Caggiano scored with 10:47 remaining in the half to make it 18-15, RIT.

Sophomore guard Chase Dickens made it an eight-point lead for the Tigers on his layup, while a Caggiano bucket gave the Tigers an 11-point lead with 6:22 to play in the half.

Zev Katz scored with 20 seconds to play in the half that cut the Tigers lead to nine points, but sophomore center Andrew Fox score in the final seconds to give RIT a 40-29 halftime lead.

Fox scored with 15:46 to play in the second half to match RIT’s largest lead of 12 points.

Vassar went on a 12-3 run, cutting the Tigers lead to six points on a Jack Rothenberg bucket with 8:47 remaining.

Rothenberg cut the RIT lead to four points on his layup with 7:51 to play.

Mustafaj converted an old-fashioned three-point play with 6:58 remaining to make it three-point game.

Katz tied the score at 58-58 on his three-pointer.

Cagginao scored on the Tigers’ next possession to give them a two-point lead, and Fox made it a four-point lead on his bucket with 4:11 to play.

Caggiano gave RIT a 65-61 lead with a pair of free throws, but Rothenberg drilled a three-pointer to cut the lead to 65-64.

Rothenberg scored with 27 seconds to play to give Vassar a 66-65 lead, and converted the free throw to make it a two-point game.

RIT missed two chances inside the final 15 seconds.

Vassar’s Ethan Ellis iced the game with a pair of free throws to make it a 69-65 final.

RIT shot 26-of-55 (47.3%), including five three-pointers

The Tigers out-rebounded the Brewers 36-32.

Fox tallied 16 points and eight rebounds, while Ryan finished with 11 points.

WHAT’S NEXT
RIT returns to action on Friday (Jan. 20) against St. Lawrence at 7:30 p.m.
