Attica’s season comes to an end in Far West Regional

November 22, 2022 by David Dobrasz Leave a Comment

After two postponements, the Class C champions Attica Blue Devils came up short Tuesday at Van Detta Stadium in Batavia, NY.

Attica (9-3) saw its season come to an end in the Far West Regionals, losing to Lackawanna (VI), 14-6.

After Lackawanna was forced to punt on a three-and-out with 2:45 left, Attica took over from the 49-yard line, down by 8. Landyn Thomas took a swing pass to the left side, outran one tackle and took it down to the 15-yard line for a 34-yard gain. Following two incompletions, an interception by Chamarr Ware sealed the game after an errant pass on third-and-10.

Attica scored its lone touchdown in the second quarter when Thomas broke through for the Blue Devils with a cut back run to the right for a two-yard touchdown on the second drive of the second quarter. The seven-play drive was kept alive by a 29-yard catch-and-run by Thomas on a fourth-and-12 to bring the ball to the three-yard line. The junior broke the plane following a face mask penalty that brought the ball halfway to the goal. Cole Harding beat his defender on a go-route for a 34-yard gain on a second-and-seven to bring the ball from the Lackawanna 30-yard line for the longest play of the drive. A penalty on the two-point try kept the score at 8-6.

Lackawanna’s Ashlin Alexander-Hall broke the scoreless tie with a 25-yard catch-and-run on the second play of the second quarter. Alexander-Hall hauled in a pass at the 12-yard line and broke a tackle to reach the end zone. On the play, Billy Gechell rolled to his right and threw across his body to find the senior. Hall followed the play with a quick out-route for the two-point conversion, and an 8-0 lead. The score came after a five-punt first quarter.

The Section VI Class D champions advanced to the NYS Class C semifinals to face General Brown (III) on November 26th at Union-Endicott High School. The Steelers last won NYS titles in ’98 and ’97 as members of Class B.
