Canisius redshirt-freshman Tahj Staveskie earned his second-straight Hercules Tires MAAC Rookie of the Week award on Monday after he averaged 14.5 points, 3.0 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 3.5 steals per game last week for the Golden Griffins.
Staveskie is the sixth different player in program history to earn MAAC Rookie of the Week honors in back-to-back weeks, joining teammate Jacco Fritz and former Griffs Craig Wise, Micheal Meeks, Frank Turner and Takal Molson.
The Sandusky, Ohio native was one of three players in double-figure scoring on Sunday as the Blue and Gold rolled Fredonia, 98-52, at home. He scored 15 points after going 6-for-8 from the field and 3-for-4 from 3-point land, while also grabbing three boards to go with a season-high four assists and four steals. In the team’s overtime loss to Cleveland State on Nov. 16, Staveskie led all Canisius scorers with his 14 points on a night where he tallied three rebounds, three steals and a pair of assists.
For the week, Staveskie shot 47.8 percent (11-for-23) from the floor and 40.0 percent (4-for-10) from behind the arc. He also hit three free-throws against Cleveland State, extending his consecutive made free-throw string to nine straight, dating back to the win over St. Bonaventure Nov. 12.
The Griffs will return to action Tuesday at Cornell, with tip-off set for 5 p.m., in Ithaca, N.Y. The game will be broadcast live on ESPN+ with the radio call exclusively on GoGriffs.com.
