Second-half comeback leads Fisher past RIT

ROCHESTER, N.Y. – The St. John Fisher University men’s basketball team were on the road on Saturday, battling against RIT in day two of the Mark’s Pizzeria Crosstown Shootout. After trailing at halftime, the Cardinals came back and defeated the Tigers by a score of 89-81. Fisher holds a record of 2-3, while the Tigers fall to 1-2.

The Tigers got a fast start on the Cardinals as soon as the first half began. Fisher quickly caught back up and throughout the first half, it was a back and forth battle. Brendan Trapper tallied the first five points of the game for Fisher. Ryan Gentile and Jack Foley both added two points early on for Fisher to keep the score close. Trapper started a momentum push for the Cardinals with two three-point shots that kept Fisher up by three. The Tigers went on a run, but was stopped on a hook shot by Connor Williams, assisted by Trapper. The Cardinals were able to keep the first half score close with Cole Thompson and Matt Panara both converting three point shots and lay ups. The Cardinals went into halftime down 37-48. Trapper finished with 19 points in the first half of play.

Gentile started the scoring in the second half with a three point shot assisted by Sean Williams. Gentile and Foley converted lay ups to start a momentum push for the Cardinals. Trapper added five points while Foley added another three to tie the game up at 52-52 with 13 minutes to play. Gentile started a scoring run for Fisher; eight points were tallied for the Cardinals to get their biggest lead of the game so far. This was achieved with buckets from Gentile, Trapper, S. Williams and Brad Fowler. The last eight minutes of the game Fisher dominated and controlled the pace. Eric Kegler was able to get on the board for the Cardinals to add to the second half success. S. Williams, C. Williams and Trapper took over and added 12 combined points in the in the last two and a half minutes of play. After 40 minutes of play, the Cardinals defeated the Tigers by a final score of 89-81.

Trapper led the way, finishing with 33 points, six rebound and one assist on the night. He shot 56.3% on FG, went 5-for-8 on three points, and finished with 76.9% on FT. Gentile ended the game with 12 points, going 5-for-8 in FG.. C. Williams ended with 11 points, seven rebounds and shot 83.3% on FG.. S. Williams had 10 points, 13 assists, six rebounds, and went 8-for-9 on FT.

Up next for the Cardinals, they will host Alfred University on Dec. 2nd at 7:30 p.m. This will be the teams first home game, as well as first Empire 8 conference match up.
