After averaging 15.0 points, 2.5 rebounds and 2.0 assists per game in his first two collegiate games, Canisius redshirt-freshman guard Tahj Staveskie was named the Hercules Tires MAAC Rookie of the Week on Monday, as voted on by the conference’s 11 sports information directors.
Staveskie, who missed the entire 2021-22 season following a preseason foot surgery, scored 19 points and grabbed three rebounds in his first career game as a Golden Griffin on Nov. 7 in the team’s home loss to Youngstown State. In Saturday’s overtime victory over long-time rival St. Bonaventure, the Sandusky, Ohio, native scored 11 points. Of his 11 points, nine of them came in the overtime period after he drilled a 3-point field goal and went a perfect 6-for-6 from the free-throw line.
Canisius will continue its four-game homestand to start the season on Wednesday, Nov. 16, when the team plays host to Cleveland State at the Koessler Athletic Center. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m., and the game will be broadcast live on ESPN+, with the radio call exclusively on GoGriffs.com. Tickets for that game, and all remaining home contests can be purchased by calling the Canisius ticket office at (716) 888-TIXX, or online through GoGriffs.com.
