Batavia and Monroe to battle for Class B title

Top seeds will battle it out for the 2022 Section V Class B Football championship when Batavia and Monroe take the gridiron on Saturday. Here’s what you need to know:

No. 1 seed BATAVIA BLUE DEVILS (10-0/ No. 7 NYSSWA Class B)
vs.
No. 2 seed MONROE RED JACKETS (8-2/No. 12 NYSSWA Class B) 

How they arrived here: Batavia got a shutout win over No. 8 Dansville/Wayland-Cohocton, 35-0 before beating No. 4 Livonia 56-14 in the semifinals. Monroe opened with a 16-0 win over No. 7 Geneva and outlasted No. 3 Honeoye Falls-Lima, 12-7.  

Players to watch for Batavia: Javin McFollins Sr. QB/DB 1552 passing yards, 19 passing touchdowns, 83-of-110 passing, 111 rushing yards, 21 rushing attempts, seven rushing touchdowns, 15 tackles, two interceptions, two pass deflections; Aidan Anderson Sr. RB/LB 560 rushing yards, nine rushing touchdowns, 74 rushing attempts, 55 receiving yards, one receiving touchdown, four receptions; Cam McClinic Sr. RB/DB 484 rushing yards, seven rushing touchdowns, 65 rushing attempts; Carter McFollins Sr. RB/OLB 185 rushing yards, two rushing touchdowns, 34 rushing attempts, 320 receiving yards, three receiving touchdowns, 17 receptions, 39 tackles, one sack, two interceptions, one kick return touchdown; Garret Schmidt Sr. OL/DL 78 tackles, six tackles for a loss, one fumble recovery; Aavion Bethel Sr. FB/LB 51 tackles, four tackles for a loss; Cole Grazioplene Jr. WR/DB 467 receiving yards, eight receiving touchdowns, 22 receptions; Vincent Arroyo Jr. WR/OLB 546 receiving yards, five receiving touchdowns, 27 receptions, one kick return touchdown.

Coaches: Brennan Briggs (Batavia), Terrell Cunningham (Monroe)

Last meeting: Batavia defeated Monroe 28-6 on September 15th.

History 101: Batavia is looking to repeat as Class B champions. The Blue Devils have claimed five titles in the last eight years, including a three-peat from 2014 to 2016. Monroe is seeking its first section title since 1979 when the Red Jackets won the Class A crown.

What’s next: The winner will go on to play Section VI champion Iroquois in the Far West Regional.

A 6 P.M. kickoff is scheduled for Saturday at SUNY Brockport.
