The RIT men’s hockey team earned a series sweep against the three-time defending Atlantic Hockey Conference champions AIC with 4-3 and 3-2 victories Saturday and Sunday.
On Saturday, the Tigers saw themselves down 2-0 after the first period. Grady Hobbs scored two goals within three minutes of each other to tie the game for RIT in the second period. One of Hobbs’s goals came with a man-up. AIC’s Blake Bennett regained the lead for the Yellow Jackets with under three minutes to go in the second period.
Gianfranco Cassaro tied the game for the Tigers 59 seconds into the final period. Cassaro’s tally came on the powerplay. Cody Laskosky scored the game-winning goal at the 11:50 mark of the final period to seal the victory for RIT.
Tommy Scarfone recorded 18 saves in the victory on Saturday.
On Sunday, Elijah Gonsalves gave the Tigers the early led 2:23 into the contest. AIC’s Josh Barnes tied the game three minutes later. Spencer Berry snatched the lead back three and a half minutes later to give RIT the 2-1 lead in the first period.
Barnes tied the game again for the Yellow Jackets in the second period on the powerplay.
Tanner Andrew scored the game-deciding goal a minute and 50 seconds into the third period to complete the sweep for RIT.
Scarfone registered 29 saves in Sunday’s contest.
RIT currently has won five straight contests as the Tigers continue their strong season with an 8-2-0 record and a 7-1-0 record in conference play.
The Tigers return home to the Gene Polisseni Center to take on Atlantic Hockey opponent Sacred Heart on November 11 and 12.
