One team is seeking its seventh consecutive sectional title. The other is looking for its first title in nearly two decades. Spencerport and Churchville-Chili will meet Saturday to decide the 2022 Section V Class A Girls’ Soccer Championship. Here’s the breakdown:
No. 2 seed SPENCERPORT RANGERS (15-1-2/Monroe County Division II) vs. No. 4 seed CHURCHVILLE-CHILI SAINTS (12-5-1/Monroe County Division II)
How they got here: Spencerport (No. 8 NYSSWA Class A) opened with a 9-0 first-round victory over No. 15 seed Eastridge and notched 2-0 wins over No. 7 seed Our Lady Of Mercy and No. 3 seed Greece Athena. Churchville-Chili grinded out 1-0 victories over No. 13 seed Greece Arcadia, No. 5 seed Irondequoit and top-seeded Pittsford Mendon.

Total goals allowed: Spencerport (10), Churchville-Chili (15)
Last time they met: These squads split the regular season series. Churchville-Chili accounted for Spencerport’s lone loss with a 3-2 win on September 8th. Spencerport avenged the setback with a 2-1 victory on September 26th.

History 101: Spencerport is seeking its seventh consecutive sectional title and ninth overall. The Rangers’ 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019 and 2020 blocks occurred in class A while last season’s championship was in A1. The Rangers achieved back-to-back state titles in 2016 and 2017 as well. Spencerport set a state record with a 64-game unbeaten streak from 2016-2018.
Churchville-Chili won three straight sectional titles from 2002 to 2004 under then head coach Nancy Thornton. Led by Laura Bojko (16 assists), Kelly Jackson (12 goals) and Monroe County Player of the Year Joanna Patalano, the ‘2002 Churchville squad avenged a loss in the 2001 Class A finals with 1-0 victory over Our Lady of Mercy. Jackson earned Monroe County Division 1 Player of the Year the following season and along with goalkeeper Katie Voorheis and Jamie Eisenhauer (11 goals, seven assists) the Saints marched into sectionals where sophomore Liz Zorn took over in goal after Voorheis suffered an injury. C-C eventually beat Canandaigua 5-1 in the AA final. Zorn, Bojko (24 assists) and Sarah Begley (21 goals, 6 assists) paced the ’04 squad that beat Webster Schroeder in the AA final, 1-0. Churchville girls last reached the finals in 2012 when they lost the AA title game to Webster Thomas.
A 2 p.m. kickoff is scheduled at Canandaigua Academy.
