ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Isaac Wing converted a sudden victory penalty kick, and the Brighton boys’ soccer team advanced to the 2022 Section V Class AA championship.
The No. 6 Bruins will face top-seeded McQuaid Jesuit in Tuesday’s final.
Brighton turned the tables on a Fairport team that had taken a pair of head-to-head regular season meetings by the combined score of 9-1.
“We get to practice tomorrow,” Brighton head coach Adam Hiller said. “This is a great group of guys. They’re so fun to be with. They kept battling all year.”

Brighton (9-8-1) opened the season with one win in its first four games. The Bruins had won three straight entering Thursday’s game.
That Brighton reached overtime was due in part to the efforts of senior keeper Troy McPherson. Part of mid-season lineup change, McPherson made a spectacular save on a Fairport corner kick attempt in the final minute of regulation. McPherson then made a kick save on a breakaway in the second overtime.
“He’s a great athlete,” Hiller said of McPherson. “He commands the box. He really skies after the ball. Moving him was really good.”
Hiller also noted the move of putting Clay Arnold at center back along with Matthew Picone as making a difference for Brighton in the second half of the season. Daniel Barraclough-Tan was moved to a defensive center mid during the switch.
