Spencerport boys soccer coach Jody Wyant watches his star attackers Justice Hinman and Kyle Milburn with amazement.
“It’s incredible what they’ve accomplished together and they’re only juniors,” Wyant said smiling after his Rangers defeated Greece Arcadia in the Class A Sectional Quarterfinals, 4-0.
Hinman scored the last goal off a breakaway pass from Milburn and with the assist, Milburn became the Rangers’ all-time leading point scorer with 101 career points, passing Randy Shaw (’92) and Nick Boetcher (’98).
“That wasn’t on my mind today, I really wanted to win this game, this team is amazing,” the junior said after scoring two goals to go with the assist for Spencerport (13-4-1).
The Rangers started cranking up the pressure midway through the first half but couldn’t find the net until, in the 33rd minute, the Rangers on a free kick, Hinman headed the ball on from the top of the box to 10 yards out from the far post where Milburn put it in and Spencerport held a 1-0 lead at the half.
Wyant said, “Teams sometimes get flat against us and I’ve given the guys the green light to recognize if a team is playing flat to play a bigger diagonal ball to give us the space we need to play into but we told them at halftime, the next goal was gonna be critical.”
And just five minutes in, his team responded. Joey Weaver took a free kick at the top corner of the box and instead of playing a ball in, played it square to Vasilios Karvounidis, who passed it to Andrew Wiebeld and the senior defender turned and scored.
Eight minutes later, Andy Moss, just off the bench, carried the ball across the field and fed Milburn, the junior let the ball run to his right foot and hit it under the bar for his 100th career point and a 3-0 lead.
“They have so much pace, that pace that those three (Moss, Hinman and Milburn) can play at, it’s unreal,” Wyant said.
Five minutes later, Milburn got the ball near the center circle and sent Hinman one-on-one with the keeper for the goal and the record-breaking assist.
“He’s a tank, a 50-50 ball? No one’s beating him, “ Milburn said of Hinman. Wyant added, “He’s a dynamic player. He’s strong on the ball, he runs into people and we sometimes don’t understand how he goes into people and comes out with the ball.”
The Rangers will face Webster Thomas in the semifinals Friday.
Milburn said, “The gameplan’s the same, score more than them and go onto the finals, that’s all it is.”
