Aquinas Institute Girls’ Volleyball won the eight-team Byron Bergen Tournament on Saturday. The Li’l Irish were a perfect 5-0 on the day and did not lose a set. AQ defeated Notre Dame-Batavia in the pool play opener 25-23, 25-23. They defeated both Dansville and Livonia to finish pool play winning all six sets advancing to the championship bracket.
In the semifinals against Byron-Bergen, senior McKalli O’Brien went on a 10-point run serving including three service aces as the Li’l Irish won 25-16, 25-19.
In the championship game, the Irish met Notre Dame-Batavia. Senior Catriona Hoelperl led the way with five kills, 11 assists, three aces, and three digs. O’Brien added seven digs in the back row while senior Sienna Hinchcliffe finished with six kills and a tournament high five blocks.
Catriona Hoelperl was named tournament MVP leading the tournament in service aces and assists. Sienna Hinchcliffe and McKalli O’Brien earned All-Tournament team honors.
The Irish (14-1 overall) finish the regular season this week with three matches. Aquinas travels to Bishop Kearney on Monday and will host its senior night Wednesday at the Wegman Napier Gym when eight seniors will be honored. The regular season wraps up on Friday at home against Eastridge.
