The Rochester Red Wings opened their series in Indianapolis on Tuesday with a 3-2 loss on an eighth-inning home run by Indians left fielder Cal Mitchell.
Rochester starting pitching again excelled, as Patrick Murphy threw four no-hit innings, allowing only one base-runner on an error while striking out four. Coming off Daniel Ponce de Leon‘s five no-hit innings on Sunday, Red Wings starters have not given up a hit in nine innings. The combined no-hitter ended with two outs in the fifth on a Mason Martin double off Andres Machado.

Offensively, the Red Wings struck first in the top of the second inning on Nick Banks‘ seventh home run of the year, a solo shot to right-center field off Indianapolis starter Osvaldo Bido. The home run, however, could have been more: earlier in the at-bat, Daniel Johnson was caught trying to steal second. In what ultimately proved to be a one-run defeat, that lost run loomed large the rest of the game.
Indianapolis tied the game in the sixth inning, as Mitchell singled home former Red Wing Drew Maggi with one out. Later in the inning, the Indians took the lead as Diego Castillo worked a bases-loaded walk off Matt Cronin to make it 2-1.
Rochester tied the game just a half-inning later with another solo home run, this time from Taylor Gushue. The Red Wings’ two home runs on the day were the most by the team in a game since Aug. 10,
Mitchell put Indianapolis ahead for good in the eighth with a lead-off home run off Curtis Taylor, 3-2. A would-be rally by the Red Wings fell short in the ninth with a man on second.
Luis Garcia, on a rehab assignment from Washington, went 0-4 on the day.
The Red Wings and Indians will play again on Wednesday at 1:35 p.m. Logan Verrett is expected to start for Rochester against Indianapolis’ Jerad Eickhoff.
