Grey, who replaced right-hander Jose Butto on the Mets’ roster, is the first Bonnies pitcher to be on a major-league team since the late Danny McDevitt who pitched six seasons in the majors (1957-62) for the Brooklyn/Los Angeles Dodgers, Yankees, Minnesota Twins and the Kansas City Athletics (Now the Oakland A’s). McDevitt compiled a 21-27 record with a 4.40 earned-run average and 303 strikeouts in his career.
In 22 games this season with the Mets Triple-affiliate Syracuse Mets, Grey had a 5-5 mark with a 5.52 ERA and 75 strikeouts in 93 innings pitched.
Grey, a native of Frewsburg in in Chautauqua County, joined the New York Mets organization in 2021. Last year, Grey pitched for the Brooklyn Cyclones (Single-A) and the Binghamton Rumble Ponies (Double-A). He capped his 2021 season with a 2-5 record, a 4.00 ERA and 62 strikeouts in 54 innings pitched.
Grey has pitched in the minor leagues since the 2016 season. He was selected by the Arizona Diamondbacks as the 599th pick in the 20th round of the 2016 MLB draft.
As a senior at St. Bonaventure, the right-hander set a single-season program record with 95 strikeouts. He fanned 10 ore more batters in three separate outings that season (2016).
