Troy McPherson hurled a complete game while a trio of batters contributed to a 13-hit onslaught as Greece Post 468 eliminated Waterford Post 161 (Connecticut) with a 5-2 win in 2022 American Legion Northeast Regional Championship action from Fitton Field in Shrewsbury, Massachusetts.
McPherson made his first pitching appearance of the tournament striking out nine batters over seven innings of six-hit ball. He retired 15 of the first 18 batters faced before allowing a home run with one out in the bottom of the sixth. He ended the night by retiring five out of the next eight batters with three strikeouts in the seventh, while giving up a run in the process.
James Capellupo collected his first three hits of the tournament. He connected on a one-out double in the third to score Aiden Cook for the second run of the game. The designated hitter added base hits in the first and the fifth.
Cook went 2-for-4 in the game with two RBI. Cook singled in the fourth to plate teammates Tyler Stack and Matt Salina to make it a 4-0 game. Cook led off the third with a base hit to left field before coming around on Capellupo’s RBI double.
Connor Sackett started out the scoring in the first with a one-out liner to centerfield to bring home Jaden Madrid. Sackett capped Greece’s scoring with a leadoff double in the seventh before scoring on Zach Allen’s RBI single in the following at-bat.
Sackett now has five hits over 10 at-bats (.500 AVG) with an RBI and a run over three tournament games. Cook has totaled five hits over 11 at-bats (.455 AVG) with two RBI and a run over the stretch. Capellupo has three hits, an RBI and a run scored during the two games he appeared at the plate.
Waterford’s Preston Tabor broke through with a homer to left field in the sixth. Brian Ingraham drove in Evan McCue with a two-out single in the seventh.
Greece Post will face Shrewsbury Post 397 on Saturday. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m. at Fitton Field. Greece is one of four teams remaining in the tournament.
