A four-run third was not enough as Greece Post 468 fell 12-4 to host, Shrewsbury Post 397 (Massachusetts) in American Legion Northeast Regional Championship action from Fitton Field in Shrewsbury, Massachusetts.
With the loss, Greece Post was eliminated from the tournament.
Aiden Cook and Conner Sackett hit back-to-back RBI-singles in the top of the third to break the scoreless tie plating teammates CJ Phelps and Tyler Stack. Phelps opened the frame with a base hit, and the bases were loaded after Stack drew a walk and Jaden Madrid reached on an error after laying down a bunt. Zach Allen and Matt Salina drew walks to force two more runs to the plate.
Greece Post ‘s(20-2) season came to an end after claiming the 2022 New York State Senior American Legion title and going undefeated in state. The team outscored opponents 159 to 48 and held opponents to one run or fewer in 12 games including five shutouts. Overall, they had 216 hits for a team batting average of .358.
Greece went 2-2 over four games in the double-elimination tournament with 30 hits and a team batting average of .377. Before the loss, the team allowed three runs to opponents with one shutout.
Cook and Sackett led Greece in hits with six on 13 at-bats (.462 AVG) a-piece. Cook finished with three RBI and Sackett drove in two. Troy McPherson recorded a win and a save over two mound appearances where he struck out 12 batters in 8.2 innings pitched and allowed seven hits. The right-hander hurled a complete, nine-strikeout game to get to the semifinals.
Shrewsbury Post had a nine-run sixth after trailing 4-3. Five of the teams runs came with two outs in the frame. AJ Hamm went 2-for-4 with three RBI and two runs scored. The shortstop started the rally with a leadoff single and connected latter in the frame for a two-out single to drive in two. Hamm’s RBI-groundout in the bottom of the third brought the game within one run.
With the win, Shrewsbury Post remains as the only undefeated team in the tournament.
