Hazen Randall scored on a passed in the top of the ninth, and Essex Post 91 defeated Greece Post 468, 1-0 in action from American Legion Northeast Regional Championship from Fitton Field in Shrewsbury, Massachusetts.
The loss was the first of the season for Greece Post (19-1).
Randall singled on a liner to right field with one out in the ninth and advanced to third on Owen Pinaud’s base hit. Randall came to the plate one-out later.
Andrew Goodrich started and struck out 11 batters through seven-plus innings of six-hit ball. The southpaw issued one walk over 7.1 shutout innings allowing a runner beyond second on one occasion. Goodrich retired the side in order in the first and fifth frames and struck out three of the final four faced. He went 2-for-5 at the plate.
Benjamin Deibler was credited with the win by recording the final two out of the eighth. Matthew Safer retired the side in order in the ninth with strikeouts of the last two batters.
The run was just the fourth allowed by Greece Post pitching in the past six games. Greece hurlers had tossed 20 consecutive scoreless innings.
Greece’s James Capellupo started and scattered four hits over seven scoreless innings. The right-hander fanned eight batters and walked two. An error in the fifth allowed for the only runner to advance to third under Capellupo’s watch.
Connor Sackett went 2-for-4 with a pair of singles in the loss. Zach Allen added a double. Aiden Cook, Jaden Madrid, Jacob Soricone and Tyler Stack had a hit apiece.
Greece Post will face elimination against Waterford Post (Connecticut) on Friday. A 9:30 a.m. first pitch is scheduled.
