BINGHAMTON, N.Y. — McQuaid Jesuit scored four runs in the fourth and held off a late rally to defeat Massapequa (VIII), 7-6 in the NYS Class AA semifinals Friday at SUNY Binghamton.
With the win, McQuaid advances to Saturday’s championship game.
Edward Hall sparked a two-out rally in the fourth when the senior outfielder tripled and scored Daniel McAliney with the tying run. Hall’s hit was the first of four straight with two outs as the Knights turned a one-run deficit into a 7-4 lead.
Will Russotti singled to score Hall and give McQuaid a lead it did not surrender. After moving to second on a passed ball, Russotti came home on Aiden Stewart’s second hit of the day. CJ Phelps capped the outburst with an RBI base hit.

Stewart finished 2-for-2 with a walk and two runs scored to lead the McQuaid offense. Ciaramitaro added a double in three at-bats. Tanner Degrazia went 1-for-3.
The game was a rematch of the 2017 semifinal that Massapequa won 7-1. Massapequa eventually lost to Liverpool (III) in the championship game.
McQuaid (18-5) will play Fayetteville-Manlius (III) in Saturday’s title game. Fayetteville-Manlius defeated Pine Bush, 2-1 earlier in the day and brings a record of 10 wins and 11 losses into Saturday’s final. A 10 a.m. first pitch is scheduled at Mirabito Stadium. The Jesuit Knights won the 2019 state championship.

Xavier Zykoff highlighted an eight-run first inning with a grand slam as Spackenkill sent 14 batters to the plate and ended Pal-Mac’s season. Noah Brooks and Isiah Stephens scored a run apiece for the Red Raiders in the third. Caleb Carr led the fourth with a base hit and came home on an error when Brooks beat out an infield single. Carr’s run cut the deficit to five at 8-3. It was as close as Pal-Mac would get. Pal-Mac had won 31 straight games dating back to last season when the Red Raiders won the first of two straight Section V Class B1 titles. The 2021 NYS tournament was cancelled due to Covid-19. Pal-Mac’s appearance in the state semifinal was the first in program history.
