14 years after winning the school’s second Section V Class A girls lacrosse title, the Royal Comets earned number three with a 9-3 victory over Pittsford in the Championship game.
“They’ve busted their butts for three and four years here and I’m thrilled for them, they’ve been great, so much fun to work with,” coach Jim DeWald said.
R-H looked like they’d run away with it early on, getting the first three goals of the game, two coming on 8-meter goals from Megan Schillinger and Avery Roberts.
The Panthers responded by scoring the next three, Jessica Robinson getting two of them to knot the game with just under five minutes left in the half.
With 52 seconds left, Roberts found eighth-grader Kate DeWald cutting in from the right. She bounced off Pittsford goalie Grace Cincebox and put the Royal Comets up 4-3 at the half.
After scoring seven goals in the semifinals for Pittsford, senior Ella Wilmot was held to just one assist but Roberts younger sister, Ashlyn.
“You gotta keep the ball out of her hands. She’s great, their whole team is great. Ashlyn is a really, really good defender, she did a nice job, we tried to help early too and the plan really kinda worked for us,” DeWald said.
Actually, understated by quite a lot.
Pittsford didn’t score again as the St. Bonaventure-bound senior draw specialist Schillinger and Avery Roberts coming in from the wings, kept the Panthers from getting the ball. When they did, sophomore goalie Angelia Oechsle stood up to the challenge.
“We had a sophomore on Wilmot (Ashlyn Roberts), we have a sophomore in goal, we have a sophomore in midfield and a freshman and eighth-grader on attack, we’re a young team,” DeWald said.
The attack closed it down as Lena Cox scored twice.
Roberts also scored twice to complete her hat trick and lock up Class A MVP honors.
“It was our chance, our time and everyone was just so up for it,” Roberts, a junior who has committed to National Champion North Carolina, said.
DeWald added, “These kids came together and believed in the group, it wasn’t going to be an individual thing, it was going to be a team thing and they did it.”
