ROCHESTER, N.Y. — The Monroe Community College Baseball team sent 11 to the plate in an eight-run second inning and went on to sweep a doubleheader (6-4/15-5) from Mohawk Valley CC in NJCAA action on Sunday.
Max Schmarder (Buffalo, N.Y./Olmstead) highlighted the outburst with an RBI triple.
“They gave us an opportunity to tack on runs, and the guys cashed in on chances,” MCC head coach Dave Brust said. “It was certainly needed. They jumped on the opportunity.”

Trailing 3-0, Justin Herrera (Stratford, CT/Bunnell) led the frame with a double. Trevor Gienau (Henrietta, N.Y./Rush-Henrietta) and Connor Kiefer (Buffalo, N.Y./City Honors) worked back-to-back walks to load the bases. Charlie Schager (DeWitt, MI/DeWitt) brought home the first run of the inning with an infield single.

Joe Wintermute (Irondequoit, N.Y./Irondequoit) brought in a run with another walk and one-out later Dylan Wanat (Buffalo, N.Y./Williamsville North) gave the Tribunes a lead they did not surrender with a two-run single.
“It was a culmination of guys having good at-bats, being patient,” Brust noted. “Ultimately, we cashed in on opportunities.”
Schmarder’s triple was the first of consecutive three-baggers for the Tribune third baseman – both times he found a gap in right center and took advantage of a good jump out of the batter’s box.
“If you pitch him middle-away and there are guys in scoring position, he usually cashes in,” Brust noted. “Max is certainly an expert at that.”
Schmarder and Wanat (hitting clean up and two-hole) combined to go 5-for-8 in game two with seven RBI and four runs scored.
“It was great to see that production in the lineup,” Brust said.
Schmarder had two triples and a double with four RBI and two runs scored. Wanat had a single and a double with three RBI and two runs.
Hayden Wesseling (Guelph, ON/Bishop MacDonnell Catholic) followed Patrick Sherron‘s lead from game one and picked up the win in Sunday’s nightcap.
Wesseling left runners on base in the second and fourth innings. The 6-foot-5 right-hander struck out three over four innings of work and improved to 4-0 on the season. He allowed three runs after tossing 5.1 shutout innings in his previous outing.
Sherron improved to 3-1 on the season allowing four runs on seven hits and a walk while striking out three.
“We have a lot of trust in those guys,” Brust stated. “They know how to work through their rough spots, which is a given. Every starter is going to have rough spots. Both those guys are competitive. They certainly have experience. They know how to get themselves back into the dugout.”
The performances proved timely for an MCC squad (17-9-1) that has four doubleheaders over the next seven days.
“They ate up the innings they needed to in order to save our bullpen,” Brust said. “They did an outstanding job.”
Kiefer finished 2-for-3 with a walk and two runs scored in game two. Ben Beauchamp (Rochester, N.Y./McQuaid Jesuit) singled and scored twice. Wintermute walked twice and scored twice. Schager also crossed home twice in the second game.
Patrick May (Baldwinsville, N.Y./CW Baker) connected on a three-run inside-the-park home run in game one. Wanat was 3-for-3 with a run scored. Schmarder walked and scored. Beauchamp collected a hit and two runs scored.
Braden Pumputis (Webster, N.Y./Webster Schroeder) pitched a scoreless inning of relief in both ends of the doubleheader. The left-hander struck out three and surrendered a pair of hits.
Griffin Dietrich (Buffalo, N.Y./Orchard Park) fanned one and hurled a scoreless stanza to notch the save in game one.
MCC has won six straight games.
